Abstract

Background:Cartilage is being used in place of temporalis fascia as a grafting material, especially for the repairing of recurrent perforations, severely atelectatic tympanic membranes and retraction pocket.Rigidity of the cartilage graft is the concern for the audiological outcome of the surgery. In this study, our aim was to evaluate the anatomical and audiological outcomes of tympanoplasty performed using tragal cartilage grafts of two different thicknesses (full thickness and partial thickness).Patients and methods: This study included 30 patients, presenting with safe CSOM and underwent type one underlay tympanoplasty between July 2014 &February 2015.Patients were divided into two groups with 15 patients in each group.Group A: patients received a full thickness tragal cartilage graft.Group B: patients received a half thickness tragal cartilage graft. Results: The rate of good graft take in both groups was (93.33%) during clinical follow-up for 6 months post-operatively, the average Air-Bone gap closure achieved in Group A was 9.71±0.52 dB, and inGroup B was 19.48 ± 5.93 dB.Conclusion:The partial thickness tragal cartilage graft is preferable to the full thickness one regarding hearing gain level in type one tympanoplasty, so cartilage of partial thickness maintains a good balance between adequate stability and good hearing improvement level.
