Abstract

Background: Infection is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in liver transplant recipients. Nurses play a key role in infection prevention so that improvement of the behavior of the nurses is an important aspect of infection control thus decreases morbidity and mortality. It is associated, as well, with a decreased need to stay in the hospital for an extra-day to many weeks so the cost decreased. Aim of the study: Assess nurses’ performance regarding infection control measures during caring patients undergoing liver transplantation. Design and apply a strategy for improving nurses’ performance and evaluate the effect of the strategies on improving nurses’ performance in caring patients undergoing liver transplantation. Method: A quasi experimental was used. It was conducted in liver transplant unit at Gastro-Enterology Center at Mansoura university hospital. Study Subjects: All available nurses (30), who provide direct care for liver transplant recipients. Educational program for nurses’ were done through using the following data collection Tools: 1) Pre-post designed questionnaire sheet about nurses’ knowledge about infection and infection control measures, 2) Observation checklists sheet of certain nursing procedure. Results: the result of this study showed significant progress in nurses’ knowledge and practices in post/test .Concluded that, by the implementation of the program there was remarkable improvement of nurses’ knowledge and practices, it was clear in post-test results Recommended a developed program should be applied and repeat again every 6 months in the same study setting and adopted in other similar settings with required modifications, provision of continuing education programs.
