Abstract

Background: Using simulation in nursing course can assist faculty to use more effective methods to facilitate learning of clinical skills and to measure skill competency or problem-solving abilities before taking students to a clinical unit. So, health care educators will need to incorporate educational technology as a part of educational process. Aim: To investigate the effect of using simulation learning on academic achievement of community health nursing students in home visiting module. Method: Quasi experimental design was conducted among all students (331) at the fourth year community health nursing students in faculty of nursing at Mansoura and Fayoum universities, assigned to: 169 students as a control groups, these students studying with traditional methods and 162 students as experimental groups studying with Simulation learning. Four tools were used for data collection after reviewing of relevant data as the following; Students socio-demographic questionnaire, Students knowledge questionnaire regarding to home visit module, Students performance regarding home visit activities, and Students perception regarding simulation learning methods. Results: revealed that the most of students were female, there was poor score level of knowledge prior learning intervention. However, there was improvement of score level of knowledge and performance in the control and experimental groups immediately after learning intervention post 1 and follow up after two weeks, but the higher score was observed in the experimental groups, highly statistical significance was founded between control and experimental groups related to knowledge and performance. The most of students were satisfied with the simulation as learning methods. Conclusion: it was concluded that simulation methods and white board (e-learning) were more effective teaching methods in nursing education than face to face traditional methods. It was recommended to applying simulation methods into curriculum of community health nursing course and combination between traditional and simulation methods in learning.
