Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a self-care educational program on alleviating side effects of parenteral chemotherapy for mastectomy women. A quasi – experimental design was utilized. The study was conducted at Oncology Center in outpatient clinics at Mansoura University Hospital. A purposive sample was utilized for this study. The study was started at January 2013 until September 2013. The study subjects included eighty mastectomised women receiving parenteral adjuvant chemotherapy for the first time. Subjects were divided into two groups: the intervention group who obtained a self- care educational program while the control group received routine care. Four tools were used for data collection. Study results showed that the mean age of the control & intervention groups were (50.63 ± 10.93 & 48.45±12.84) respectively, significant increase in post-test of women’s knowledge for the intervention groupcompared to the control group (t2=10.55).Significant decrease in post-test of anxiety for the intervention groupcompared to the control group (t2=8.69). Highly significant decrease in symptoms of chemotherapy as fatigue, dry mouth, nausea, felling drowsy, vomiting & feeling sad (p= 0.000). Conclusion self- care educational program was effective on increasing women’s knowledge regarding chemotherapy. It helped them apply self- care strategies to alleviate chemotherapy induced physical and consequently the psychosocial side effects.
