Abstract Our study was done in the Clinical Pathology Department, Faculty of medicine, Sohag university hospital, on 200 patients who had been attending the outpatient diabetic clinic in Sohag University Hospital known to have type 2 diabetes mellitus. The aim of our work was to determine the prevalence of diabetic nephropathy in type 2-diabetic patients in Sohag, Upper Egypt. The results of our study revealed that the prevalence of microalbuminuria (incipient diabetic nephropathy) was 29.4% and that of macroalbuminuria (overt diabetic nephropathy) was 15.4%. The results of our study revealed that duration of diabetes, BMI, HbA1C, serum creatinine and albuminuria show significant increase in microalbuminuria and macroalbuminuric groups when compared to normoalbuminuric group. Our results revealed also that hemoglobin significant decrease in microalbuminuria and macroalbuminuric groups when compared to normoalbuminuric group. The presence of microalbuminuria is an indication to the physician to take steps to prevent further renal damage by correction of risk factors. Urinary excretion of microalbumin should be monitored routinely in patients with DM. We concluded that clinicians should be aware of the risk of diabetic nephropathy in type 2 diabetic patients. This work highlighted the prevalence of diabetic nephropathy in type 2 diabetic patients. |
