Abstract

The main aim of this research is to study the linear and nonlinear behavior of the space
trusses under the effect of fire. The research was carried out into several phases: First
phase, an experimental test on a space truss model was carried out to study the behavior
of the space trusses under normal conditions and under the effect of fire load. A
comparison between the two tests was held to show the effect of the increase in
temperature on the overall behavior and the stiffness of the truss.
The second phase of this research focused on the numerical behavior of the tested space
truss model. Numerical model using ANSYS, 2012 software was employed to assure the
results obtained from the experimental test of the space truss. F.E. analysis was
performed using two different models. A comparison between the experimental test and
the numerical analysis was presented. As well as, a comparison between the two models
used in the finite element analysis was held. The results showed a good agreement
between the experiment and the F.E. analysis. The finite element analysis using the first
model showed a reasonable results that are consistent with the experimental results.
The third phase was a numerical study on previously published space trusses to show the
effect of the temperature increase on the nonlinear behavior of the space truss. In this
phase: models for El-Sheikh and Mezzina were studied by subjecting the lower joints of
these trusses to an increase in temperatures. Moreover, the results obtained from the current research were compared by the results obtained by El-Sheikh and Mezzina under
normal operations.
