Abstract

Phalangeal and metacarpal fractures either closed or open are common injures can be treated conservatively or operatively depending on the nature of the injury, fractures pattern and stability. Most phalangeal and metacarpal fractures can be treated conservatively. Patients with multiple fractures, open fractures, intra articular require operative reduction and stabilization to obtain the optimal position for bone healing and to allow early movement. There are many methods for operative fixation either closed or open methods. Internal fixation may be done by mini plates and screws require open wound and soft tissue dissection which may lead to adhesions. Mini external fixator can be used in highly comminuted fractures, intraarticular fractures, open fractures and multiple fractures. During the period from February 2014 to February 2015, a total of 21 patients with metacarpal and phalangeal fractures were treated by mini external fixator in the Orthopedics and Traumatology Department of Tanta University Hospital. The average age of the patients was 30 years, ranging from 13 to 55 years. The shortest follow up period was 12 weeks, while the longest was 36 weeks with a mean follow up period of 20 weeks.
