Abstract

Sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum) is a common herb, used for culinary and medicinal purposes. The essential oils of different sweet basil chemotypes contain various proportions of the allyl phenol derivatives estragole (methyl chavicol), eugenol, and methyl eugenol, as well as the monoterpene alcohol linalool Sweet basil is grown in gardens for its flavorful and aromatic leaves for use in pesto and other sauces. While basil has long been prized for its aroma, delicacy as a spice, and its beauty and fragrance as an ornamental, the plant also contains essential oils that are used by the perfume, pharmacy, and food industries. Few realize the multitude of natural chemicals contained in the essential oil that can be extracted and used in perfumery and flavoring This study aimed to increase the yields of the herb and its essential oil content with high quality and quantity of Ocimum basilicum by using different laser sources. These include dry and wet seeds which were exposed to He-Ne and Ar lasers at 2, 5 and 10 mints exposure time and at the power densities of ~ 95 mW/cm2 for all laser sources. plant height, number of branches/plant, number of leaves/plant, fresh weight, dry weight, essential oil percent, chlorophylls, nitrogen percent, phosphorus percent, potassium percent, zinc content, cupper content, total carbohydrates, protein percent and the composition of essential oil samples were determined for all laser treated and untreated plants. The results obtained illustrated that the wet basil seeds which were exposed to He-Ne laser at 2 min with humic substances application have a high yield of herb compared with the other type of laser and the other exposure times. On the other side, wet basil seeds which were exposed to He-Ne laser at 10 minutes with humic substances application provided sweet basil plant of high amount of oil after their cultivation compared with the other type of laser and the other exposure times Key words : seeds; lasers; Irradiation; germination; seed-treatment; essential oil-; plant production; plant physiology.
