Abstract Improving the transmission system capacity is the best solution for the growing demand problem and the difficulty finding new corridors to construct new overhead transmission lines. Some techniques are used to improve the transmission system capacity such as using high temperature low sag conductors (HTLS) instead of the conventional used type of conductor, uprating the voltage level and using Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) controllers to compensate the reactive power. This thesis presented and clarified the three techniques used to improve the transmission system capacity taking into account the economic aspect beside the technical aspect. Applying the three techniques on some parts of the Egyptian HV and EHV transmission system gave good result from technical and economic point of view. Using HTLS conductors such as ACSS, GTACSR, ZTACIR, ACCC and ACCR can increase the current carrying capacity and the transferred capacity taking into account the conditions to choose appropriate conduction which are the diameter, sag, working tension and ultimate tensile strength. Uprating voltage level can increase the power transferred through the transmission line and some issues such as conductor air clearance, insulation electrical strength and overvoltage are investigated and taken into account to develop an appropriate methodology. Using Static Var Compensator which is one of the FACTS family can regulate the voltage, increase the active power and compensate the reactive power transferred through the transmission system. |
