Abstract

Gas burners are widely used in many applications ranging from industrial boilers, gas turbines in aviation, to domestic stoves. Flame characteristics and stability are important issues in burner design and combustion process. Partial premixed-diffusion flame behind bluff bodies presents one solution for flame stability. LPG is considered as it is commonly used fuel and has the least fire hazards compared with hydrogen or other premixed gases. The present work investigates the mentioned stability technique using LPG as a fuel.
An experimental apparatus was designed and fabricated to study the effects of changing operating parameters on flame characteristics, and blow off limits. The premixed ratio was varied from 0 to 80%, the equivalence ratio from 0.8 to 1.4, while the blockage ratio was changed from 13.1% to 40%. Axial and radial temperatures were measured and flame shape and size were visualized. Gas emissions were measured at different locations along the flame length using electro chemical cells gas analyzer.
