Abstract This work aimed to study the status of Cu in some Egyptian soils at El-Fayoum Governorate –Sinnours district with special reference to evaluate some methods of available Cu extraction. To achieve this target, fifty six soil samples represent layers of a depth of 0-30 were selected to analyzed for mechanical and chemical analysis and extract copper by different extractants. A greenhouse pot experiment using wheat as an indicator plant was set up to find out the most suitable extraction method. The average amounts of extracted Cu decreased with the following sequence of extractants: HCl 0.1 N > EDTA > DTPA > CaCl2 0.1 N. The obtained results reveald that the total amounts of Cu ranged between 11.20 and 69.80 mg/kg soil with an average of 45.30 mg/kg soil. In general, soil content of total Cu was more related to the texture classes, where the relatively high content was associated with the clayey soils, while the moderate and low content were found in medium and relatively coarse texture ones. A significant positive correlation was found between total Cu and each of clay, silt + clay and organic matter contents. A similar was found with available Cu extraction. However, a negative correlation between total or available Cu and each of CaCO3% and sand% was observed. The obtained data lead to the conclusion that the best extractant used was DTPA solution for estimating available Cu from soils under the conditions of the current coefficient with the Cu uptake by wheat plants (r = 0.76). |
