Abstract

The possibility of using the sunflower (Helianthus annuus)extractantsHAE1and HAE2 as asolvent extractant for uranium and REEs from their sulfate liquors means for their recoveries has been studied. Several experiments were conducted to determine the relevant factors affecting both the extraction and stripping of the uranium and REEs from a synthetic solution. Under the optimum conditions, the achieved uranium capacity has attained 33mg/g for uranium while for REEs capacity has attained about 25mg/g for HAE1. Under these conditions, the achieved uranium capacity has attained 22mg/g and12mg/g for REEs via HAE2.
The optimum stripping conditions for about 98% of uranium content from the loaded HAE1 and HAE2 include stripping agent type 1M NaCl /1M H2SO4 , aqueous to organic phase ratio (A/O) 1:3, stripping time15 min and at room temp. the optimum stripping conditions for REEs content from the loaded HAE1 and HAE2 included stripping agent type 1M NaCl /1M HCl, aqueous to organic phase ratio (A/O) 1:3, stripping time 15 min and at room temp.
from the prepared sulfate leach liquor of Abu Zeneima ore material (South Eastern Sainai, Egypt) uranium and REEs has then been recovered using the working HAE1 under the previously studied optimum conditions. Accordingly, a uranium extraction efficiency of 97% has been obtained. Subsequently, the uranium-loaded the sun flower extractans was subjected to uranium stripping using 1M NaCl /1M H2SO4 under the studied optimum stripping factors. These included an O/A ratio of 3/1 at room temperature for 15min. contact time and a settling time of 5 min. Uranium was then precipitated from the obtained strip liquor using NH4OH solution at pH of 7.5 and analysis of the obtained precipitateammonium uranium oxide hydrate [UO3NH3H2O] was found assay 76% uranium which has been confirmed using XRD and EDAX analysis.
Consequently, the REEs extraction efficiency of 82% has been obtained the REEs-loaded the using sun flower extractansHAE1and HAE2 was subjected to REEs stripping using 1M NaCl /1M HCl under the studied optimum stripping factors. These included an O/A ratio of 3/1 at room temperature for 15min. contact time and a settling time of 5 min. The obtained strip liquor was then subjected to precipitation using 20 % oxalic acid and to precipitate REEs as lanthanides oxalate. The obtained precipitate has been confirmed using EDAX analysis.
