Abstract

e aim of this thesis is to study an important problem facing translators when translating poetry; namely, the problem of phonological equivalence in literary translation, and the possibilities of realizing it. This study attempts to introduce creative equivalences as one of the suggested solutions in translating rhymed metrical poetry from English into Arabic. This was achieved by adopting an approach that combines theory and practice, through analyzing six selected poems, on grounds of them being generally considered masterpieces of English literature for renowned English poets translated into Arabic following two different translation approaches. The research followed an analysis process on both the micro-level and the macro-level. At the micro-level, the analysis has been carried out using creativity in translation on the word, phrase and sentence level. While at the macro-level, the analysis has been employed on the whole text level. All this was attained by following a descriptive approach to translation theory and its practices.
The results of the study confirmed that creative equivalence can solve the problem of phonological equivalence, by attempting to fill this void and reduce the gap significantly between the translatability and untranslatability of poetry, and thus prove that the translation of poetry is not impossible nor fanciful. The study suggests that phonological equivalence could be achieved through careful transfer of the stylistic and rhetorical features of text, which enrich the aesthetic aspect of the text and its content. In other cases, creative equivalence could be presented in a lively and innovative way using the idiomatic and expressive words, according to the poetic license. The study has also proven that the phonological and creative equivalences are achievable on the two linguistic levels, i.e. micro-level and macro-level.
