Abstract During the past decade, it has become evident that protection and efficient use of water resources must become at the top national priority, particularly, with expecting of continuous technological development, however, increasing urbanization, industrialization, agricultural and other human activities have caused enormous deterioration of water sources i.e. considerable chemical and microbial pollution in the most of water bodies, particularly the rivers. The Ismailia Canal is the principle source of drinking water supply for a great number of the Egyptian citizens (about 12 million inhabitants), exposed to industrial pollution from the effluent discharge of purification plants, power ones, petroleum companies and fertilizer companies. This study is dedicated to provide detailed data about the water quality and sources of PAHs in water of Ismailia Canal, from its inlet to El-monair city, Water samples were collected in the four seasons from nine different locations of Ismailia Canal during 2011-2012. 1. Physico-Chemical assessment of water samples The Physico-chemical assessment showed that each location were characterized by a specific type of pollution that reflected in the water measurements for example the highest Temperature degree were found in Location 4, the Highest COD, BOD and ammonia concentrations were found in location 5, and the highest OP conc. Were found in location 7. And also notable to say that the summer season was the most polluted season upon the 4 seasons. The physic-chemical assessment results showed that, Water temperature ranged from 22-37oC during four seasons. The outlet of Amirya station was the only site that had temperature (37oC in summer) above the permissible limit while the minimum value was recorded in location 1 (Begining of Ismailia Canal) during winter; the pH values were. |
