Abstract

The aim of this study was to implement a birth plan and evaluate its effect on womens’ childbirth experiences and maternal &neonatal outcomes. A quasi experimental design was utilized. The study was carried out at antenatal clinic& labor ward at Mansoura university hospital from February to October 2013.The study subjects included 260 pregnant woman divided into an intervention group with average number of 130pregnant woman, and control group average number of 130pregnant woman each they were selected (purposive sample). Three tools were used for data collection a structured interviewing questionnaire sheet included 3 parts; demographic data, childbirth expectations fulfillments sheet and childbirth satisfaction questionnaire to assess the level of women’s satisfaction about the effect of birth plan on childbirth experience, unstructured interview with nurses and physician to document feasibility & barriers of implementing a birth plan in maternity care, observation check list to assess maternal & neonatal outcomes. Study results showed a statistically significant positive effect of birth plan on maternal & neonatal outcome and highly statistical significance of satisfaction in birth plan group as (p<0,001). In the light of these results the study supports the effectiveness of birth plan on child birth experiences.
