Abstract

Low back pain is the most common cause of job related disability and a leading contributor to missed work. It can occur with lifting too heavy things causing a sprain, strain, or spasm in one of the muscles or ligaments in the back .The study aim was to determine effect of superficial hot versus cold application on low back pain among patients with disc prolapse. Setting: The study was carried out in neurosurgery out patient’s clinics of University and Teaching hospitals of Menoufia governorate, Egypt. Subjects: A random sample of 150 adult patients of both sexes with disc prolapse was randomly selected and assigned alternatively and randomly into three equal groups, 50 patients each. Tools of the study: Three tools were used for data collection: Interviewing questionnaire, Visual Analogue pain Scale and Oswestry low back pain disability questionnaire. Results: Applying superficial hot application has a significant effect on reducing mean total low back pain score from 7.24±1.34 pre compresses application to 4.36±1.35, 2 weeks post compresses application than superficial cold application. Also superficial hot application has a significant effect on reducing total Oswestery pain score than applying superficial cold application. Conclusions: Low back pain was decreased and activity of daily living was improved among disc prolapse patients who used superficial hot compresses than those who used superficial cold compresses. Recommendations: Supervised health education should be carried out for all patients with disc prolapse about ways to alleviate or prevent back pain especially hot application and colored booklet about disease processes and compresses application should be available and distributed to all patients with disc prolapse.
