Abstract

Nutrional and Biochemical Studies on Uses of Opuntia Ficus- Indica juice, and Aqueous Extract of Carica papaya leave on Rats Suffered
from hepatotoxicity The present study was conducted to investigate the possible uses of Prickly Pear (Opuntia ficus-indica) fruit juice and papaya leaves (Carica Papaya) extract on liver functions of injected rats with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). Thirty six (36) male white albino rats of an average body weight 150-200 g of Sprague Dawley Strain were divided to six groups with six rats in each group. The first one fed on basal diet the second treated orally with the juice (3ml/rat)for 28 days and the third treated orally with leaves extract(3ml/rat)for 28 days. The other three groups were injected by CCl4 . One fed on basal diet the second treated orally with fruit juice (3ml/rat)for 28 days and the third treated orally with leaves extract(3ml/rat)for 28 days .After an overnight fast , the rats were sacrificed and was blood collected for assay of liver function enzyme levels , lipid profile, superoxide dismutase and whole blood cell. The results showed a significant decrease in the level of alanine amino transferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and very low< density lipoprotein (VLDL). Also the results indicated a significant increase in the level of superoxide dismutase (SOD). Therefore, Opuntia ficus-indica and papaya leaves may be considered a hepatoprotective and curative effect.
