Abstract

The study was carried out to evaluate the effect of ginger rhizomes and green tea leaves extracts as natural antioxidants in rats. These were based on that those agents contain phenolic and flavonoid compounds, which are used as antioxidants in rats. They may be protect animals from atherosclerosis and damage of liver and kidneys. This study includes two major points: Fristly :- Studing the chemical composition of ginger rhizomes and green tea leaves. The results could be briefed as follows: 1. Ginger rhizomes contained total proteins (17.72%), Ash (0.31%), crude fiber (0.58%), crude lipid (4.81%), total carbohydrate (57.60%) and total phenols (510mg/100g d.w.) which was higher than that in green tea leaves Green tea leaves contain total proteins 13.72% and (376 mg/100g d.w.) total phenols 2. Gginger rhizomes contain 16 phenolic compounds, the predominant of them were quercetin (21.41%), gingerol (18.7%), zingerone (17.77%) and salicylic acid (12.07%). While green tea contain 15 phenolic compounds, the predominant of them were querectin (26.76%), catechin (23.3`1%) and salicylic acid (13.32%). 3. The essential oil of ginger contain 25 compounds, the predominant of them were: -zingibereen (23.64%), geranial (12.92%), geraniol (11.62%) - terpineol (8.77) , 1,8 cineol (7.97%) While green tea contains 23 compounds four of them are predominant 4,1,8 cineol (37.83%), terpinen-4-01 (20.58%), γ- terpinene (12.39%) and camphene (11.29%) II-Biological investigation in rats 1- Studing the antioxidant effect of ginger rhizomes and green tea leaves extracts on rats 2- Adding H2O2 0.5% in the drinking water of rats in positive control 3- Adding 500mg from the extracts to the water of rats The results could be briefed as follows: 1- The data showed that there was an improving function of liver and kidneys as a result of plants extracts 2- The ginger and green tea extracts improved total proteins, albumin and globulin of plasma. 3- There is a decrease in lipid peroxidation and an improve in antioxidant enzyme activity 4- Liver function (AST, ALT and ALP activities) and kidneys function leves (uric acid , urea and creatinine), total proteins and its fractions (albumin and globulin ) in plasma were readjusted around normal control due to treatments 5- The green tea extracts revealed a decrease in body weight guin and kidneys, liver and heart weight of rats.
