Abstract

A rapid increase in the use of advanced technology in the late nineties of the last century until now has raised concern for the health and well-being of the computer users. The risks and dangers to one’s health from the use of computers have been established. Aim: The aim of this study was to assess neck and shoulder pain among computer users in Menoufia University. Design: A descriptive comparative cross-sectional study design was used. Sample:
A cluster random sample of 500 computer users who assumed to use computers in their work was included. Setting: The study was conducted at Menoufia University institutions including administrative building, some selected faculties and hospitals.Tools: two tools were used; An Interview Questionnaire and Pain Assessment Scale .Results: the findings revealed that, the percentage of studied computer’s user’s with neck and shoulder pain was 58.0%. The computer users without neck and shoulder pain had good knowledge, good practice and positive attitude towards proper use of computer in work environment compared to computer users with neck and shoulder pain. The majority of the studied computer users who had pain, 87.6% had combined neck and shoulder pain, 11.4% had shoulder pain only and 1.0% had neck pain only. Conclusion: the study concluded that, neck and shoulder pain was significant and prevalent problem among university administrative employees. It increases with the duration of computer use and the number of working hours. The computer users without neck and shoulder pain were had good knowledge, positive attitude and good practice about computer use in work environment compared to computer users with neck and shoulder pain. So, they need special care and attention .Recommendation: Raise community’s awareness through mass media to prevent Work- Related Musculoskeletal Disorders among computer users, periodic training courses to computer users and periodic medical checkup for early detection of sign and symptoms related to computer use.
