Abstract

Hysterectomy is a commonly performed surgical procedure that impacts on many aspects of a woman’s life. Removal of the uterus with or without conservation of the ovaries often threatens woman’s femininity, and their ability to conceive and to perform their roles as wives and mothers and produce a sense of incompleteness and distortion of the body image. The aim of the study was to identify the effect of counseling women after hysterectomy at Shebin Elkom. The design, quasi – experimental was utilized. The sample, all women who admitted for hysterectomy at the time of conducting the study. The setting: the study was conducted at Menoufia University Hospital department of obstetrical and gynecological. The Tool included structured interview questionnaire, an observational checklist to observe women’s practice at the 1st and 2nd days after hysterectomy such as post operative exercise, questionnaire, and items to assess physical, psychological, social and sexual effect after hysterectomy. The results: the current study revealed that the mean age of the sample study was ±43.68 years; the highest percentages of them were illiterate, house wives and married. The majority of the women had deficit knowledge about post hysterectomy exercises and complications. Also most of the women had negative psychological effect before and after operation. Most of women had limited idea about sexual relationship after hysterectomy. Conclusion, There was lack of total knowledge and practice regarding immediate care after hysterectomy, physical effects, and most of the women had misconceptions regarding sexual relationship. Recommendation: The pre-operative counseling is recommended to be applied at hospital plus a simple booklet contains the knowledge needed for hysterectomy.
