Abstract

The present study is exclusively concerned with exploring whether Qur’anic scientific lexical items are adequately rendered in a number of English translations. The main focus of the study has been to identify the most salient features of these items. The study has also attempted to touch upon the strategies adopted by translators to come to terms with the problems that come into play upon translating these items into English. The corpus of the study is confined to the analysis of 22 scientific items from the the 30th part of the Qur’an for a number of reasons. First, this part abounds in polysemous scientific items that pose more challenges on translators. Second, it includes various scientific branches e.g. earth sciences, astronomy, embryology, physiology, etc. (see appendix 2). Finally, it has a large number of Meccan chapters that are more likely to include more scientific references than Medinan ones. Hence, the 30th part of the Qur’an offers a rich field of comparison between the Arabic scientific items and their English equivalents. The translations utilized are those attempted by Pickthall (2004) first published in 1930, A. Y. Ali (1993) first published his three volume edition in 1934–1937, and Abdel-Haleem (2005) first published in 2004 on the ground that they represent old and recent translations. Besides, they adopt different approaches in translating the Qur’an. To achieve the aims of the study, it is divided into three chapters, other than the introduction and the conclusion. The Introduction provides some basic remarks of the study. Chapter One, Theoretical Background, introduces a theoretical background of the study. It is divided into two parts; the 1st part touches upon the nature of Qur’anic scientific lexical items. The 2nd part is devoted to discussing a number of translation theories and translation strategies. Chapter Two, Corpus and Methodology, sheds light on the corpus of the current study. Chapter Three, Analysis of Qur’anic Scientific Lexical Items and their Translations, conducts a comparative study of the three translations under study with the view of showing whether these translations are successful in rendering the various meanings of the selected items, including the scientific one. Finally, Findings and Conclusion presents the most important findings. The findings of the study show that translators of the Qur’an encounter many translation problems upon rendering scientific items into English due to linguistic, scientific, and ideological reasons. Nord’s (1997) documentary translation with its different strategies is recommended for rendering Qur’anic scientific lexical items into English. Failing to render the scientific meaning properly into the TL might lead to serious mistakes and erroneous renderings
