Abstract

Skin tags are small flesh coloured to dark brown sessile or pedunculated papillomas commonly occur on the neck frequently seen in axilla and eyelids less often on the trunk and groin. Both sexes have the same incidence which tends to increase with age and obesity , skin tags are histologically composed of loose collagen fibers and dilated capillaries enclosed in a hyperplastic epidermis , the etiology of skin tags is still unclear. A relation to diabetes mellitus, obesity, acromagaly, colonic polyps and HPV has been suggested , previous study suggested a possible involvement of mast cells in the etiopathogenesis of skin tags , mast cells are widespread in the human body but particularly abundant in the skin dermis, distributed close to blood vessels and nerves , mast cell granules contain many cytokines, histamine, proteoglycans and several mast cell – specific proteases such as: chymase, tryptase and carboxypeptidase , mast cells participate in the pathogenesis of fibrotic diseases, they are found to stimulate fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis through some fibrotic mediators such as tryptase and histamine , not only do mast cells stimulate fibroblast proliferation but also to a lesser extent stimulate keratinocyte proliferation and epidermal acanthosis , the aim of this work is to perform quantitation of mast cells and Measuring serum level of progesterone and estradiol in skin tags in pregnant and non pregnant females in order to find the possible correlation between mast cells and serum progesterone and estradiol level in the pathogenesis of skin tags , our results showed a statistically significant correlation between mast cell count and serum estradiol level in both studied groups Mast cell count in skin tags lesions was statistically higher in the pregnant than the non pregnant , our conclusion is that both mast cell mediators and serum estradiol level are invilved in the pathogenesis of skin tags also serum estradiol level affect mast cell count while progesterone has no effect on the mast cell count.
