Abstract

Summary Nursing is a demanding profession which requires the ability to withstand stressful situations like death and emergencies (Schluter, Turner, Huntington, Bain, McClure, 2011) trainee nurses may become vulnerable to stress because of the use of less effective coping strategies such as avoidance when handling stress (Piko and Piczil, 2012). Sherina, Rampal and Kaneson (2004) stated that nursing schools are now recognized as a stressful environment that often exerts a negative effect on the academic performance and psychological well-being of the students. Students may experience stress in different fields, therefore; the insufficiency of theoretical training, lack of skills in clinical practices, to take the responsibility of the patient, time pressure, lack of motivation and accommodation, social life, relationship with the opposite sex, new responsibilities, living in a new environment may be perceived as stress (Martos, Landa, and Zafra, 2011). Coping strategies are defined as a set of behavioral and cognitive responses to stress. (Feng, Wang, Wang and Liu, 2006). It is important to maintain well balanced academic environment conducive for better learning, with the focus on the students‟ personal needs. Students‟ expectations vary with respect to personality and their backgrounds which influences on how one perceive the environment around her (Agolla, 2009). A combination of problem – focused coping with the more positive emotion- focused dimensions ought to be most effective (Mc Vicar, 2003 ; Connor-Smith and Flachsbart, 2007). Therefore; The aim of this study was to assessing the sources of stress and coping pattern among students in the secondary technical nursing schools in Helwan city.
