Abstract Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease, characterized by excessive growth and aberrant differentiation of KCs, angiogenesis in the dermis, and a mixed leukocytic infiltrate in both the dermis and epidermis. Complex genetic underpinnings, various environmental factors, and activation of the innate and adaptive immune system have been implicated in the pathogenesis of the disease. The HIF-1 α is a heterodimeric transcriptional complex of HIF-1 α and HIF-1 β subunits, that has been recognized primarily for its role in the maintenance of oxygen and energy homeostasis. Different studies have shown that HIF-1 plays a central role in the stress response beyond hypoxia. A number of mediators of inflammation can activate HIF-1 α , and HIF-1 α stimulates the expression of several genes encoding proteins that promote inflammatory reactions. In addition, hypoxia has been implicated in the pathogenesis of various forms of inflammation. The present study was designed to evaluate HIF-1 α by immunohistochemical analysis- in tissue samples of patients with psoriasis. This study included 20 patients with psoriasis attending the Outpatient Clinic of Dermatology, Tanta University Hospitals. The patients were 13 males and 7 females, their ages ranged from (24 to 67) years with mean of (47.60 ± 12.66) year. In addition, 10 healthy persons of matched age and sex served as controls. Tissue samples were taken from all patients and controls for immunohistochemical evaluation of HIF-1 α expression. |
