Abstract

The toxicological, biochemical and histological effects of four different pesticides namely, Chlorpyrifos, Trichloroisocyanuric acid, Azadirechtein and Spinosad were evaluated on the freshwater crayfish Procambarusclarkii. Based on the LC50values Chlorpyrifos was found to be more toxic effect on P. clarkii than that of the three other tested pesticides.Biochemical changes occurring in the haemolymph, hepatopancreas and muscle of male and female P. clarkii after exposure to two sublethal concentrations of the tested pesticides were studied for 7 days of exposure.Chlorpyrifos, Trichloroisocyanuric acid and Spinosad significantly decreased haemolymph glucose, cholesterol and triglycerides but increased uric acid. Chlorpyrifos significantly decreased haemolymph total protein while Trichloroisocyanuric acid and Spinosad increased haemolymph total protein. Azadirechtein was significantly increased glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, total protein and uric acid levels in the haemolymph of both sexes. The four pesticides were found to decrease the total protein, cholesterol and triglycerides in the hepatopancreas and muscles of both sexes but increased triglycerides in hepatopancreas of male. Gel electrophoretic studies revealed that exposure of P
