Abstract

Congenital heart diseases (CHDs) are the most common
birth defects with an incidence of approximately 6-8 in
1,000 live births.
Malnutrition is defined as a state of poor nutrition and
failure of growth. Failure of growth exists when weight or
weight for height, is less than 2 standard deviations below the
mean for sex and age, weight is less than the third centile, or
weight for age has a z value of less than -2.0.
The concept of ―prehabilitation,‖ essentially preparing
the patient for the upcoming insult and major metabolic
stress, has gained momentum and is of keen interest in many
surgical circles.
Prehabilitation program was prepared and applied on
40 patients (group A who received nutrition 2 weeks before
surgery and group B who received nutrition 1 week before
surgery) inside the postoperative pediatric CICU.
Data gained from the 40 patients was statistically
studied The results were as follows; postoperative
complications and mortality were statistically lower in group
A, furthermore, postoperative weight gain duration of
mechanical ventilation, length of hospital stay showed
significant difference between both groups. Many of recent studies carried out for the pediatric
patients in the CICU have similar results to our study. Some
other studies have better results than our study.
We concluded that the nutritional and other clinical
outcomes as well as fate of the patients was markedly
improved after application of the prehabilitation nutritional
program.
from our results, we recommend that nutrition
delivered to the patients in the ICU should be guided by
prehabilitation program and that the regular assessment of
the nutritional status of the patients clinically and laboratory.
