Abstract

This thesis aims to present metatheatre as a term that might be added to the many terms set by critics to define the kind of theatre that emerged in the modern era as a predominant dramatic form of writing. This thesis sheds light on the influence of metatheatre on the selected works of Tom Stoppard and Harold Pinter as British playwrights. It also shows the role of metatheatre in revealing reality which has been one of dramatists’ major concerns in different ages. The divisions of the study: This thesis consists of three chapters in addition to the introduction and conclusion. 1-The introduction contains a precise biography of Tom Stoppard and Harold Pinter. The first chapter deals with the terminology of metatheatre, its origin and history through the different ages. 2- The second chapter concentrates on metatheatre in Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead and The Real Inspector Hound. 3- The third chapter gives a detailed explanation about metatheatre and its techniques in Harold Pinter’s The Lover and Betrayal. 4- A conclusion then follows to sum up the main findings of the thesis with regard to the different uses of metatheatre and their impact on the plays of Tom Stoppard and Harold Pinter.
