Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the levels of environmental pollution in three governorates in Upper Egypt; Qena, Sohag and New-Valley by using Cattle Egret as bio-indicator for environmental pollution. A total numbers of 61 were collected as follows: Qena (n=20), Sohag (n=22) and New-Valley (n=19). The level of lead and cadmium in feather, liver and bone of cattle egret was determined by using atomic absorption Spectrometry (AAS) method. Our results revealed that; the average means of lead levels in feathers in Qena, Sohag, and New-Valley regions were (0.7 ± 0.355, 0.566 ± 0.447& 0.356 ± 0.158) mg/ kg respectively. While the average mean of cadmium levels in feathers in Qena, Sohag, and New-Valley governorate were (1.003 ± 0.902, 0.304 ± 0.107 & 0.275 ± 0.229) mg/ kg respectively. The average mean lead levels in the liver of cattle egret in Qena, Sohag, and New-Valley governorate were (0.901 ± 0.214, 0.266 ± 0.233 & 0.207 ± 0.324) mg/ kg. While the average means cadmium levels in liver of cattle egret in Qena, Sohag, and New-Valley governorate were (0.168 ± 0.026, 0. 130 ± 0.050 & 0.113 ± 0.042) mg/ kg respectively. The average mean lead levels in bone of cattle egret in Qena, Sohag, and New-Valley governorate were (1.84 ± 0.346, 1.66 ± 0.977 &0.862 ± 0.566) mg/ kg respectively. While the average means cadmium levels in bone of cattle egret in Qena, Sohag, and New-Valley governorate were (0.238 ± 0.032, 0.098 ± 0.036 & 0.041 ± 0.024) mg/ kg respectively. The highest lead concentration between the three tissues (bone, liver and feather) in the three governorate (Qena, Sohag and New-Valley) was present in bone in Qena governorate was (1.84 ± 0.346 mg/kg), while the highest Cadmium concentrations between the three tissues (bone, liver and feather) in the three governorate (Qena, Sohag and New-Valley) was recorded in feathers collected from the Qena governorate and was (1.003 ± 0.902 mg/ kg). |
