Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder that constitutes a major public health problem throughout the world.Diabetes is classified into type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes mellitus.Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of the disease and usually involves insulin resistance and β -cell dysfunction.Type 2 diabetes is determined primarily by lifestyle and genes.Several therapeutic stratgies are currently available for the treatment of this chronic metabolic disorder. The limitations associated with those therapeutic strategies have led to a determined search formore efficient and cost-effective alternatives.Complementary and alternative medicine applications have attracted special attention in recent research for they offer new promising opportunities for the development of efficient, side effect-free, and lower cost alternatives to existing synthetic hypoglycemic agents.phenolic compoundsm widely distributed in food plants, act as a primary antioxidant and can be helpful for improving or preventing a number of chronic diseases. Among various phenolic compounds, caffeic acid, found in many types of fruit and coffee in high concentrations. Licorice is one of the most widely used herbs from the ancient medical history.Glycyrrhizin is the major constituent of licorice root. When glycyrrhizin is administered orally, glycyrrhetinic acid is the major metabollic. Glycyrrheitinic acid is an important bioactive substance of licorice with a variety of pharmacological effects. Our study aims to evaluate the promising hypoglycemic effect and antioxidant effect of caffeic acid and 18 β-glycyrrheitinic acid on induced type 2 diabetes in rats.
