Abstract

The Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus is an important commercial species and is one of the major farm fish species on the global scale in the subtropical regions. Nile tilapia responds promptly to environmental biological alterations. Nile tilapia species demonstrate different oxygen requirements and acclimatory responses to hypoxic and hyperoxic conditions, making them the prime models in studies of oxygen-dependent processes. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of hypoxia on the activities of antioxidant and associated enzymes. Oxygen level is a critical factor affecting the distribution of ectotherms, particularly in fish. Oxygen demands depend very much on environmental temperature.
