Abstract

Torture is defined as any act by which severe pain or suffering either physical or psychological is intentionally inflicted on a person for a purpose of obtaining information or confession, punishment, intimidation or
coercion by a public official in a public capacity.
Torture can be classified into physical, sexual and psychological.
Fabricated wounds “alleged physical trauma” must be clarified as an
allegation and not a crime of torture.
The crime of torture occurs all over the world. Many treaties and conventions appeared to prevent this crime and to stand up against it.
Torture of political detainees by Egyptian security forces occurs
since Gamal Abd-Elnaser and until today. Not only political detainees, but
also other criminal and civil detainees are also tortured in all police departments.
In this study we collected a hundred cases of torture from April 2011
to June 2013 presented to medico-legal sector of forensic authority in El-
Minya. This work was done to study pattern of injuries in police tortured
victims in Egypt and to gather information on different characters of victims of torture. Many factors were discussed as regard victims of torture such as types of torture, age and sex of victims, evidence of injury, permanent infirmity, time passed till forensic examination, blind fold, documentation of injuries and mechanical restraint.Blunt trauma pattern of injury was the commonest pattern in all cases. There were 14 cases with allegation of physical trauma. Most cases were males (94) and only 6 female cases. Most cases (85) were within the age group (21-40) years.
There is a direct relation between healing and time passed till forensic examination, also there is a negative relation between evidence of injury and time passed till forensic examination.
