Abstract

Cryptosporidiosis is a parasitic disease caused by Cryptosporidium, a protozoan parasite; it affects the intestine of mammals and is typically an acute short-term infection. It spreads through the fecal–oral route, often through contaminated water. The main symptom is self-limiting diarrhea in people with intact immune systems. The present work was conducted to study the antiparasitic effectiveness of A. sativum (garlic), Ginger (Zingbar officinale), Mirazid as natural components and Metronidazole as chemical product in the prevention, as well as treatment of Cryptosporidium infections in experimentally infected immunocompetent mice. The present experiment used 50 male albino mice each weight about 25-30g. In the present study, infected mice that were treated with ginger, mirazid, garlic and metronidazole showed significant symptomatic improvements during the treatment period. Therefore, these treatments may have a direct and powerful impact on the parasite that consequently minimizes the pathology associated with C. parvum infection. Importantly, C. parvum- infected mice that were treated with ginger, mirazid, garlic and metronidazole showed a complete elimination in fecal oocyst shedding by day 9 PI. The reduction and elimination of fecal oocyst shedding in response to these treatments seen here may be attributable to a direct effect on parasite growth in the intestines, the production of the sexual phases, and/ or the formation of oocysts.
