Abstract

This investigation was carried on 51 jumping thoroughbred horses (geldings and females) belonging to the Egyptian armed forces Equestrian Club. The aim was to study the specific conformation of the jumping thoroughbred objectively using a measuring tape and goniometer. Moreover, taking photographs of horses using digital camera and making image analysis using software AutoCAD (2013) v19 program was done. In addition to study the role of conformation in musculoskeletal affections predisposition and in their performance competition results(according toEgyptian Equestrian Federation rules).
The baseline measurements of conformation parameters in lengths and angles in fore and hind limbs of the breed were determined. Also, parameters of abnormal limbs conformation were determined and discussed. Moreover, variable conformational parameters in musculoskeletal problems were significantly (P>0.05) decreased neck, shoulder and pelvis lengths, in contrary to fore – arm length that found increased. In addition, dorsal shoulder and elbow joint and hind fetlock joint angles were significantly (P< 0.05) decreased.
Performance competitions in thoroughbred horses showed unique conformation parameters in first class (Ranking).First rank horses had significant (P<0.05) increased in the mean neck, shoulder, pelvis, gaskin lengths and wider breast and significant (P< 0.05) decreased in back, arm, fore arm fore cannon and thigh lengths. Moreover, First rank horses showed significantly increased (P< 0.05) in dorsal shoulder joint angle, croup angle and stifle joint angle. Each of shoulder joint, elbow joint lateral angles, dorsal fore fetlock joint and hind fetlock joint lateral angle showed significant decreased (P< 0.05).
The data of the present study could be used as indicator of better soundness and for selection of a horse with less risk of developing lameness. Furthermore, this conformation parameter is useful for breeders, trainers and buyers as they can avoid purchasing horses with serious conformation defects and physical handicaps.
