Abstract

In the present study, ten healthy mature goats ”Capra hircus” of both sexes and of age ranged from one to five years old were utilized. The pancreas was removed rapidly from the abdominal cavity just after the slaughter of the animals. Tissue samples were obtained from the right lobe, left lobe and the body of the pancreas.
The specimens for light microscopy were immediately fixed in 10% NBF and processed for paraffin technique. Sections of 5µm thickness were obtained. They underwent H&E stain, silver impregnation technique, Crossmon’s trichrome stain, AB (PH 2.5) and PAS technique.
Also, some specimens were stained by IHC staining using avidin biotin peroxidase method. The specific primary antibodies used were the anti-insulin (4E-BP2 polyclonal antibody, 1:50, Thermo scientific, Pierce antibody products, USA), anti-glucagon (PA5-35317 polyclonal antibody, 1:10 Thermo scientific, Pierce antibody products, USA) and anti-somatostatin (PA5-16253 polyclonal antibody, 1:50, Thermo scientific, Pierce antibody products, USA). Another minute (1 mm3) tissue pieces for transmission electron microscopy were fixed in a buffered GA/FA fixative. Then processed till ultrathin sections were cut and stained with uranyl acetate and lead citrate.
Anatomically, the pancreas of goat had a pinkish brown colour and roughly quadrilateral shape. It was a compact organ that located retroperitoneally in the abdominal cavity right to the median plane. The pancreas was composed of two lobes (right and left) and a small body that was perforated by the portal vein and cranial mesenteric artery. The pancreas was covered with a thin transparent capsule.
The right lobe and the body were situated between the visceral surface of the right lobe of the liver dorsally and the omasum and was enclosed within the mesoduodenum of the descending duodenum while the left lobe extended to the attaching border of spleen. There was only one duct (main pancreatic duct).
