Abstract

Environment protection is considered as one of the major challenges for our
society. One of the important issues is the reduction of the environment impact of
waste materials due to demolition constructions. At present these topics are
getting considerable attention as part of sustainable development programs.
The concrete cast using recycled aggregates from construction and demolition
wastes (C&DW) as a structural concrete is considered as an alternative to
conventional concrete. That type of concrete is called recycled aggregates
concrete (RAC), the use of RAC preserves natural resources and reduces the
space required for the disposal of RCA in landfill. These types of recycled
aggregates have large absorption ability for water. Therefore, RAC needs more
amounts of water for mixing and curing. So, the use of a type of concrete does
not need conventional curing such as self-curing concrete may recommended.
The combination of two types provides a suitable solution for the protection of
the environment, preserve natural resources.
The main objective of this research is using the demolitions of buildings as a
coarse aggregate in self-curing concrete as recycled-aggregate self-curing ”RASC”
concrete. Durability of this type was studied. Experimental program is
divided to three parts. The first part studied the mechanical properties of RAC
and how to enhance these properties using superplasticizer. The second part
studied the effect of chemical curing agent on the fresh and hardened concrete
properties of RA-SC concrete. The third part aimed to study the durability of this
type of concrete under the chloride and sulfate attack.
The fresh properties of RA-SC concrete was illustrated in the term of slump
test. The hardened properties of RA-SC concrete were introduced in terms of
compressive strength, splitting tensile, flexure and bond tests.
Based on this study, we can obtain recycled-aggregate self-curing concrete
using suitable dosage of curing agent. Also, RA-SC concrete performed well
under the attack of the chloride and sulfate (in the range of this study)
