Abstract

T
his study hypothesized that Conduct disorder is highly correlated to marital conflict and to poor parenting.
The aim of this study was to test this hypothesis among the Egyptian adolescents, and to correlate the severity of Conduct Disorder with that of marital discord and / or poor parenting.
This research is a cross sectional case control study, the case group (40 adolescents with CD) and the control group (40 normal volunteer adolescents). These 2 groups were assessed and then compared aiming to fulfilling the objectives of the work. Using “Marital satisfaction inventory” to assess the marital relationship, “Parenting behaviors scale” to assess the parent – adolescent relationship and “Revised Behavior Problem Checklist” to assess the severity of CD., then the results were statistically studied.
Adolescents exposed in their families to marital conflict between their parents and/or brought up under poor parenting (poor parent – adolescent relationship) were found to be at higher risk for Conduct disorder.
Marital conflict and poor parenting are strong and consistent risk factors for Conduct disorder in adolescents. The present study went into the depth of marital life and parent- adolescent relationship to reveal which aspects in these both domains are more correlated to CD and its severity.
So this study provides more specific data about what (in the numerous dimensions of the marital and parental relationships) is significantly related to conduct disorder (and determining its severity) and what is not.
Generally, the findings of this study confirmed that most areas (dimensions) of distressed marital relationship and poor parental relationship are significantly correlated to occurrence of Conduct disorder i.e. the poorer marital relation between couples (parents) and the poorer the parent – adolescent relationship, the more Conduct disorder occurs in their adolescents, so families with marital conflict and / or poor parent – child relationship are more vulnerable to having Conduct disordered adolescents.
