Abstract Epilepsy is a chronic neurologic disorder characterized by the recurrent attacks of spontaneous seizures which affect about 1% of the population worldwide. About 30% of epileptic patients are resistant to antiepileptic drugs as they do not adequately respond to these drugs and in these patients the surgical removal of the epileptic focus is often the only therapeutic option to achieve seizure control. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that transfers electrons from a substance to an oxidizing agent. Oxidation reactions can produce free radicals. which start chain reactions that damage cells. An antioxidant is a molecule capable of slowing or preventing the oxidation of other molecules. Neurochemical and enzymatic activities studies suggest that excitotoxic stimulation in status epilepticus induces excess production of reactive oxygen species(ROS) and finally leads to oxidative stress. In these circumstances, the production of ROS may have a very important role in the development of seizures itself Epilepsy induced by pilocarpine in animal models is similar to human temporal lobe epilepsy in semiology and electrographic appearance. The epileptic model induced by pilocarpine is very useful for us to study the development and neuropathology of temporal lobe epilepsy. Sirnvastatin is amember of a group of lipid lowering drugs called statins which are H\1G-CoA (3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl eo-enzyme. |
