Abstract

The general objective of the present study was to assess the effect of primary knee OA on patients’ activities and the quality of life in those patients. This was achieved through assessing the level of pain, stiffness, ability to perform recreational activities and physical functions in patients with primary knee OA in the studied group.
The study was conducted in the Orthopaedic and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation outpatient clinics in Menofia university hospital during the period of the study. All primary knee OA patients attending to selected clinics two days per week for each clinic were selected to participate in the study.
Diagnosis of primary knee OA was done through complete history, general examination (as weight, height and BMI), local examination of both lower limbs and x-ray to assess the grade of the disease.
The present study revealed that there was highly statistical significant correlation between duration of osteoarthritis and parameters of KOOS as symptoms, stiffness, pain, ADL (activity of daily living) and QOL (quality of life) scores.
The present study showed highly significant positive correlation of the BMI of knee OA patients and stiffness scores of KOOS and activity of daily life (highest scores of ADL indicates extreme limitation).
The study showed that there was highly statistical significant effect of duration of knee OA and total scores of OAKHQOL. It also showed highly significant negative correlation of the duration of knee OA and quality of
life in performing daily physical activity. On the basis of these results, we concluded that the duration of knee OA had a major effect on patients’ daily activities and quality of life.
The present study showed a significant negative correlation of the BMI of patients and their quality of life in performing daily physical activity. On the basis of these results, we concluded that BMI was associated with the incidence and progression of knee OA.
The present study showed that there was highly negative statistical correlation between parameters of KOOS and total scores of OAKHQOL of the studied group.
This study also helped to highlights areas where we need to work on to improve the prognosis in patients with primary knee OA through studying the risk factors of the disease, its’ effect on patients’ life and the role of family physician in management of the disease.
