Abstract Striae distensae are linear atrophic depressions of the skin with overlying epidermis atrophy. Although striae distensae do not cause any significant medical problems, aesthetically they can be a cause of great concern or psychological stress for many women. Striae distensae occur frequently in numerous physiological and pathological conditions such as adolescent growth spurts, pregnancy, mechanical stress, Cushing’s and Marfan syndromes, and long-term systemic or topical steroid use. Successful treatment of striae distensae has always been challenging. Although several treatment modalities have been proposed, no consistent modality is available. Besides the traditional topical therapies such as tretinoin, hydrant creams, and chemical peels, lasers have become popular therapeutic altemative in the treatment of striae distensae. Microdermabrasion and microneedling are capable of generating collagen and other dermal matrix components, which may ’fill in’ contour deformities as are seen with fine wrinkles, acne scars and striae distensae. The aim of this work was to compare the therapeutic efficacy and tolerability of microneedling versus microdermabrasion in the treatment of striae distcnsae. |
