Abstract

Little information exists regarding the age distribution of IMT in a
healthy pediatric population, despite the need of early cardiovascular
prevention.
So, the present study find the normative value of carotid artery
intern-media thickness in healthy adolescent’s age 13-15 years. To attain
this target, the study recruited 109 adolescents. They were subjected to
careful history taking, thorough clinical examination and assessment of
the carotid artery intima-media thickness.
In the present study, the mean IMT of the right carotid artery was
0.52 ± 0.07 in comparison to 0.52 ± 0.07 of the left carotid artery with no
statistically significant differences between both sides. Comparison
between right and left IMT showed no statistically significant difference
between right and left IMT measurements (p< 0.05).
Regarding the association between the CMIT in the studied
children and the demographic characteristics, the present study found a
significant direct correlation between the child age and IMT in both right
and left carotid arteries (r=0.21 and 0.26 and p= 0.024 and 0.006
respectively).
In respect to the association between weight, height and BMI and
CMIT measurements, the current study found a statistically significant
direct association between the studied children weight and BMI and the
reported CMIT measurements. For left cIMT, p-value was 0.045 and
0.017 for weight and BMI respectively, while for right cIMT, p value was
0.023 and 0.0016 for weight and BMI respectively.
SUMMARY
60
Considering the association between the studied patients blood
pressure measurements and IMT, the present study found that no
significant correlations between blood pressure and CIMT in both right
and left sides.
Finally , our normative data can be used to estimate the “arterial
age” of individual subjects by comparing individual measurements with
the percentile distributions described herein. This is an intuitive and
promising approach for risk stratification, which requires further
validation
