Abstract

Intestinal parasitic diseases are among the most common infections worldwide and are more prevalent in the poorest communities of the developing world. It is estimated that 3.5 billion people are affected and that 450 million become ill as a result of these infections, the majority being children. These infections are regarded as a serious public health problem, as they cause iron-deficiency anemia, growth retardation in children, and other physical and mental health problems.
The aim of this work was to assess the effect of parasitic infestations on growth and school achievement on primary school children at Belbies city.
To achieve these objectives, a prospective study was carried out on 470 school aged children ranging from 6 years to 11 years, (52.1%) male and (47.9%) female. The children were taking from both rural (53.2%) and urban (46.8%) areas with different socioeconomic status and mother education level. Children were chosen by multistage random sample from primary schools in Belbies.
Parameters chosen for assessment of physical growth were weight and height and compare the result with Egyptian growth charts. Assessment of school achievement was done by assessment of students’ marks in the three month of the second term.
