Abstract

Prostate cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in men and develops in nearly 30% of all men above the age of 50 years. The major studies evaluated if cancer therapy could be changed from chemotherapy and radiotherapy due to their complications to biotherapy, using biological agents with minimal or no adverse effects. The wide application of propolis in modern medicine has drawn growing attention to its chemical composition. It is widely used to prevent and treat colds, wounds, ulcers, rheumatism, heart disease, diabetes and it showed anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant and antitumoral effects. The presented study is a trial to investigate the effect of the ethanolic extract of Egyptian propolis in comparison to a conventional chemotherapeutic drug, namely, Doxorubicin and the effect of their combination on PC3prostate cancer cells in vitro. Preparation of Ethanolic Extract of Propolis: Propolis samples were extracted by maceration at room temperature, with occasional shaking, in the proportion of 10 grams of propolis to 100 ml of solvent (ethanol 80%v/v). Extracts were obtained after 7 days of maceration and the ethanolic extracts were then filtered and incubated at room temperature until ethanol evaporated and the product obtained a honey-like consistence which is referred to as Ethanolic of Extract of Propolis (EEP). Treatment compounds: Doxorubicin (DOX) used as a positive control compound. Ethanolic extract of propolis (EEP) (remedy compound). Combination of both DOX+EEP at (v/v) conc.
