Abstract

Satellite images have a great importance to economic development and management of natural resources in any country. So, it is important to increase the use of satellite images for oil exploration process. Nowadays, it seems the best way of doing this is to use the capabilities of remote sensing technology with its repeated coverage of the earth surface.
The motivation of using satellite images for oil exploration is given by the fact that the past conventional explorations techniques have not been able to have adequate mapping coverage for concession area at the required scale, or even update existing data at proper rate. Also it costs a lot to use seismic and other traditional methods in reconnaissance step in order to select the suitable area for concession and locating the accumulations of different oil indicators.
Moreover, the new generation of high resolution remote sensing and the modern techniques in image processing gave a new trend of finding oil indicators at different scales and producing maps and locating specific interpreted objects.
The purpose of this research is to introduce cost effective methods for finding real oil indicators in reconnaissance stage, and to develop a tool for the user to select suitable satellite images according to specific conditions.
The purpose is extended to investigate the influence of different parameters that may affect the probability of oil existence during the process of finding oil from space.
This study involves the analysis of different projects that used satellite images for finding oil indicators at different environmental and topographic conditions to cover most of common cases that may occur and to solve problems caused by the use of other traditional methods.
For the collaboration and link between research and oil industry, a questionnaire was suggested for oil companies at different sectors. Feedback was collected and analyzed for the purpose of evaluating the value of using satellite images for oil exploration and to have a background about exploration problems in Egypt.
The results were promising, s software was developed to manage the extracted data form cases and to introduce a guide for the user to select suitable satellite image for the area of interest.
