Abstract

The main objective of the present study was to assess the neonatal outcome in relation to umbilical vein Doppler compared to umbilical artery Doppler in growth restricted fetuses. The study was conducted among 72 IUGR fetuses and women at risk of developing intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) such as women with gestational hypertension, diabetes mellitus and pre-eclampsia.
All women were subjected to full assessment via detailed history, general and obstetric examination, routine laboratory investigations and ultrasound assessment of the fetus. Doppler examination of umbilical artery (UA) and umbilical vein (UV) was performed. Absent or reversed UA end diastolic flow and pulsatile flow in the umbilical vein were examined for their efficacy to predict critical outcomes (still birth, postnatal death, IUGR, Apgar score<5).
Analysis of data in the present study has shown that mean age of the studied patients was 26.9 with range of 19 – 36 years. 13.9% of them were smokers. 13.9% of the patients are ≥G4, 31.9% of them are nulliparous. As regarding risk factors for IUGR and chronic medical conditions we have found that 4.1% have DM, 27.7 % have gestational hypertension, 5.5%have chronic hypertension, 13.8% have preeclampsia. History of anemia was present in 70.8% of the patients.
