Abstract

Phototherapy is a special light treatment used to help the body to get rid of the excess bilirubin through breaking it into parts that are easier to eliminate in the stool and urine. The efficiency of phototherapy is largely determined by nursing care. Appropriate nursing care >minimizes the potential side effects and complications, and enhances the effectiveness of phototherapy. Moreover, the neonatal nurses’ practice is mainly influenced by their knowledge, so that, Aim of the present study was to assess the nurses’s knowledge and practice about care
needed for the newborn under phototherapy in neonatal intensive care units in Ismalia city. Design: descriptive research design was utilized in this study. Setting: the study was conducted at neonatal intensive care units in the Suez Canal University, Al-Amery hospital and El-khair and El-barka hospital. Sample: including all nurses (50) who work in the previous mentioned hospitals and agreed to participate in the study. Tools for data collection: two tools adopted by the researcher.1) Structured questionnaire to assess nurses’ knowledge. 2) Observational checklist to assess nurses’ practice of care needed for neonates under phototherapy. Results: less than half of the studied nurses have nursing diploma, more than half of nurses have experience less than 5 years. The majority of nurses don’t attend any training sessions related to neonatal jaundice, the majority of the nurses know the basic steps for exposing the neonates to phototherapy, all of nurses don’t measure neonates’ length, head and chest circumference. All of nurses have very good level of practice when taking heel stick blood sample, while the minorities of them have good level of practice in taking venous blood sample. Conclusion: the study concluded that, one third of the nurses have fair or good total knowledge scores about jaundice, phototherapy and daily nursing care for neonates, while the majority of them have very good total practice scores even they did not follow all the procedures steps. Recommendation: it is recommended to organize continuing training programmes or work shops for neonatal nurses about neonatal jaundice and care provided for neonate under phototherapy. Key word, phototherapy, nurses’ knowledge, nurses’ practice, neonates care.
