Abstract

Responsibilities of nurses for minimizing rate of mechanical ventilation pneumonia may differ among countries as it is a serious complication of mechanical ventilation, which increases morbidity. This study aims to identify impact of guidelines protocol on minimizing ventilator- associated pneumonia among pediatric patients. A quasi-
experimental design was utilized. The present study conducted at both Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Zagazig University Hospital. The study subject includes two groups Group I, All nurses provided direct nursing care for child who received mechanical ventilation totaled 30 nurses. Group II, 180 children were admitted to Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit who received mechanical ventilation and free from any signs of pneumonia during admission, divided into two groups, 90 children whom received ordinary nursing care (control group) and 90 children whom received guidelines protocol for minimizing ventilator-associated pneumonia (study groups). Two tools were used; first, a questionnaire sheet to assess nurse’s knowledge as well as child assessment sheet, the second tool was a structured observational checklist for nurse’s practice. The study findings concluded that, a statistically significant difference in
level of practice of studied nurses between pre and post guidelines protocol. Significant minimizing in the V AP rates among studied children, as well as statistical significance in duration of mechanical ventilation and length of stay of the child in ICU between pre & post guidelines protocol. The main study recommendation included that, development of training program should be conducted periodically for nursing staff in ICU, and guidelines protocol should be available and implemented in Egyptian ICU.
