Abstract

The thesis comprises three chapters. The first one is concerned with the literature survey on the chemistry of sulphur-nitrogen containing compounds mainly those of thia- zolylazo. The studies were reported from different views : trace analysis for cations and anions, the use as indicators, their coordination chemistry and the evaluation of thermo- dynamic parameters for the complex formation. Some of these compounds possess hyponotic drug property, affect the nervous system, some were applied in the fight against gastric cancer, chemotherapeutic agents and in the structure of nucleic acid for living systems. This chapter is ended with the aim of this thesis. Two series of thiazolylazo compounds were selected for the studies one of the substituted phenols and the other of some pyrimidines (barbituric acid, thiobarbituric acid and thio- uracil). The scope of the studies was done on both the chelating agents and their transition metal complexes. The structure of the organic compounds was acheived based on different spectral techniques (infrared and electronic) in presence of different solvents and variable pH’s. The dissociation constants of these compounds were evaluated spectrophotometrically and pH-metric- ally. The data were explained from the electronic character of the substituents and the concentrations of the solvents. The phenomena of tautomerism, solvation and aquation are explained. The formation constants of the complexes were evaluated using pH-metric techniques. A programmed computer analysis was applied.
