Abstract

The problem of pollution in relation to fish and their environment have received increasing attention during the past decades. Many investigations were made to measure acute toxicity of pollutants on aquatic organisms. Thereby, the use of fish in toxicity testing is well established in many coun- tries by law. A great number of different test methods are described (Sprague, 1969; Scherer, 1979; Mclean et al., 1980).
For a better understanding of the node of action of tox- icants more informations about the biochemical changes are necessary. Study of the toxicity should be more concerned with sublethal effects (Fujiya, 1965; Cairns, 1966; Alderdice, 1967) and therefore in the last years many investigations were directed to sublethal effects of pollution under diff- erent environmental conditions. Some influences of environn- ental factors like oxygen, pressure, temperature, salinity... etc. and seasonal variations on toxic responses are known (Lloyd and Swift, 1956; Lloyd, 1961a; Alderdice, 1963; Mcleay and Gordon, 1978; Swift, 1981). But a further knowledge is nec- essary to predict dangerous changes in fish environment espe- cially after addition of toxic substances.
Teleost fish are rather good indicators for polluted.
