Abstract

The present study was conducted to study the effect of lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus)powder and lemon grass tea on diabetic , renopathic and hepatointoxicated rats.Fourty male albino rats used in this study, the rats divided into ten main groups(4 rats for each group). Group (1) control negative. Group (2) control positive group for hepatointoxicated rats fed on basal diet. Group (3) control positive group for diabetic rats fed on basal diet. Group (4) control positive group for renopathic rats fed on basal diet. Group (5) hepatointoxicated rats fed on basal diet containing 7.5% lemon grass powder/ kg diet. Group (6) hepatointoxicated rats fed on basal diet and treated daily with boiled water extract(lemon grass tea) prepared from 200g lemon grass/1000ml boiled distilled water by stomach tube. Group (7) diabetic rats fed on basal diet containing 7.5% lemon grass powder/kg diet. Group (8) diabetic rats fed on basal diet and treated daily with boiled water extract(lemon grass tea) prepared from 200g lemon grass/1000ml boiled distilled water by stomach tube. Group (9) renopathic rats fed on basal diet containing 7.5% lemon grass powder/kg diet. Group (10) renopathic rats fed on basal diet and treated orally daily with boiled distilled water extract ( lemon grass tea ) prepared from 200 lemon grass/1000ml boiled water by stomach tube respectively . At the end of the experimental period (4 weeks), the rats were fasted overnight before sacrificing and the blood samples were collected then centrifuged to separate the serum. Liver, kidney , aorta ,lungs and spleen removed from each rat, cleaned , weighted to estimate of organs weight/body weight percent and stored these organs in formalin solution 10% .Liver ,kidney and aorta were prepared for hestopathological examination. The results indicated that, feed intake decreased in the positive control groups than that of the negative control group, feed intake of all treated groups increased than that of the positive control groups. BWG% increased significantly in all treated groups, as compared to the negative and positive control groups. Total serum cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-c, VLDL-c, uric acid, urea nitrogen, serum creatinine, serum Na,serum K, glucose, AST, ALT , ALP and total bilirobin ,direct bilirobin, indirect bilirobin and AI increased significantly in the positive control groups, as compared to the negative control group and HDL, total protein , globulin , albumin, SOD, GPx and catalase decreased significantly in the positive control groups, as compared to the negative control group. Urine creatinine, urine volume ,creatinine clearance, urine Na and urine K increased significantly in the positive control group for renopathic rats, as compared to the negative control group. Treating rats with 7.5% Cymbopogon citratus/ kg diet and boiled water extract(Cymbopogon citratus tea) prepared from 200g Cymbopogon citratus /1000 ml boiled distilled water led to restored significantly these parameters to their normal levels , especially when Cymbopogom citratus tea used .The histopathological examination of aorta, kidney and liver in this study confirmed the role of Cymbopogon citratus powder and Cymbopogon citratus tea in improving the aorta, the kidney and the liver. Key words: Rats – Cymbopogon citratus – lemon grass– diabetic– - renopathic – hepatointoxicated– histopathological.
