Abstract

The aim of the thesies is to investigate the impact of gust as case of wind speed variation on the stability of wind farms composed of fixed speed wind trubines based on SCIG and on the stability of wind farms composed of variable speed wind trubines based on DFIG.The continuous increasing in the pollution level and in the same time
increasing in fuel price are factors lead to the increase in using renewable
energy sources specially wind energy. Wind power production faces many
challenges, one of the important challenges is that of the rapidly change in
wind speed which depends on the weather condition. A change in wind
speed affects on the generated power from wind turbine. SCIG and DFIG are
famous kinds of wind turbine, each of them has advantages and
disadvantages, SCIG is cheap but its operation has a harmful effect on
system stability. DFIG keeps the system stable but it is very expensive
technology for many countries.
The thesis proposes a gust as a case of wind speed variation. The thesis
uses Matlab/Simulink program to simulate the wind speed variation
according to International Electrotechnical Commission 61400-1 (IEC
61400-1). The thesis focuses on the impact of gust which represents the
wind speed variation according to reference IEC 61400-1 on stability ofwind farm connected to grid when the wind farm is composed of Squirrel
Cage Induction Generator (SCIG) and when it composed of Double Fed
Induction Generator (DFIG).
The thesis investigates the stability of wind farm by studying the voltage
stability as one of power system studies. In this thesis the voltage stability
analysis is achieved by using two different kinds of Voltage Stability Indices
(VSI) indicated by VSI_1 and VSI_2 which are used to indicate the voltage
stability condition. The thesis designs a hybrid wind farm consists of an equal number of
SCIGs-based wind turbine and DFIGs-based wind turbine without
STATCOM connected to wind farm. The thesis designs this kind of wind
farm to overcome the instability of SCIG and expensive price of DFIG.
Key words: IEC 61400-1, Gust, Squirrel Cage Induction Generator

Thesis is organized in 7 chapters. Notation, list of table, list of figures and
abbreviations are shown after the list of contents. Literature references are
mentioned in square brackets by numbers. Equations are numbered in format
(x.y) and figures are numbered in format Figure x.y where x is the chapter
number and y is the number of the item.
